On September 21, 2017, President Trump issued an Executive Order (“Order”) imposing additional sanctions on North Korea. The Order is aimed at curbing North Korea’s ability to fund its nuclear and ballistic missile programs by giving the Secretary of the Treasury additional tools to target non-US persons engaging in trade with North Korea and non-US financial institutions supporting such trade.

The new legislation amends Regulation (EU) 2017/1509 to impose a total ban on coal iron, iron ore, seafood, lead and lead ore, as well as introducing sanctions to target North Korea’s arms smuggling and ability to access finance from abroad. The EU has extended its sanctions in respect of actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine for a further six months, until 15 March 2018. The list of persons subject to asset freezes and travel bans has been reviewed and amended slightly to reflect individuals who are now deceased and companies which have merged.
