In its meeting today, the EU Foreign Affairs Council (“FAC“) decided to “step up, as a matter of urgency, its external action on countering terrorism in particular in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, including Yemen, and North Africa, in particular also Libya, and the Sahel” in response to the recent terrorist attacks in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
In the formal conclusions of the meeting, the FAC reiterated the EU’s “strong support to relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, in particular Resolutions 2170 and 2178” and called on all Member States to act to “ensure their swift implementation with full respect for human rights and the Rule of Law.” It called for “comprehensive action against terrorism“, noting that such threats “can only be countered through international cooperation and determined national action“.
