The European Council’s formal conclusions following its meeting on Monday 16 March confirm that the EU will introduce, “in full coordination” with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2174, sanctions against those who “threaten the peace, stability or security in Libya, or who undermine its political transition“.
The Council emphasises for a “decisive breakthrough” in the UN-facilitated political dialogue, describing Libya as being “at a crossroads“, and calls on “all regional actors and neighbours of Libya to use their influence on all domestic Libya actors” to ensure the talks conclude successfully. The increased level of terrorist and extremist activity in Libya is condemned in the statement as well as “actions against Libya’s national assets, financial institutions and natural resources“.
